Most of the pictures on this site were made with PaintShopPro because my goal was to create large, simple gif images that would load fast and be true to the originals when viewed on a 256 color monitor.  PSP comes with, among other things, the standard pallette that makes this possible.  It also has numerous image editing features, will open and save in many graphic formats, is easy to use, and best of all, it is a genuine bargain (cheap).

PaintShopPro and a number of other graphics programs are available as shareware at the JASC website.

Harve Glowne, man of science? Fractal Design Painter, on the other hand, was more expensive and allows for great subtlety, but it gives me heart palpitations at the thought of losing the manual.  I keep promising myself I am going to take the time to learn all the stuff about selections, shapes, paths, automatic masking features, anchor points, brush variants, inverting paper grains, advanced filling techniques and, of course, expanding floaters.  Somehow though, whenever I open Painter I just end up pushing digital paint around.  But that's ok: the results are pretty neat and the program is very enjoyable to work with in this manner.

Harve Glowne, here on the left, was conjured up using Painter.  The background (which you may not be seeing if your browser doesn't support backgrounds in tables - Gee, designing web pages is so exciting) was done in PaintShopPro.

And speaking of bargain software.....
